In the N690 vs. D2 debate, both steels have earned a loyal following for delivering solid performance well above their price point — though they get there in very different ways. N690 is a true stainless steel prized for corrosion resistance and easy maintenance, while D2 is a high-carbon tool steel famous for holding an edge longer than steels twice its price. This N690 vs. D2 breakdown covers where each steel comes from, how their chemistry shapes real-world performance, and which one makes more sense depending on how you actually use a knife.

Both M390 and Elmax come from [Böhler-Uddeholm](https://www.us.bohler.com/en-us/), the Austrian-Swedish steel manufacturer familiar to many knife enthusiasts—even if they’ve only seen the name on a blade’s spec sheet. M390 is one of Böhler’s flagship “super steels,” designed to compete with the top powder-metallurgy steels on the market. Crucible’s CPM 20CV and Carpenter’s CTS-204P have nearly identical compositions, so all three generally offer comparable performance, with heat treatment and blade geometry helping determine how they perform in an actual knife.
